Up to about '97 they are not exactly rare in Kalifornia. They do exist
in good numbers. The people who have them are hanging on to them. Can
you blame them?
Getting a diesel isn't that difficult. There is a used car dealer in
SoCal that specializes in VW TDI, sorry I can't recall his name. He
supposedly scours the entire US for prime specimens to bring back and
sell.
The only law against diesels in those five socialist states is that they
cannot be sold new off the showroom floor. They can be brought in to and
sold in Kalifornia if they:
-have >7500mi (ie, no longer used),
-a resident is on travel outside the state and has a catastrophic
failure of his Kalifornia automobile,
-a non resident moves into Kalifornia with his diesel.
Your friends need to have a catastrophic failure of their car on the way
through Washington and Oregon. Then they can buy a 2004/5 TDI and drive
her home!
