    A couple of my A1's had issues with the column mounted switches.  Most
were due to crud accumulating between the column and the wheel.  You might
try shooting through the opening with a quickly evaporating electronic
parts/ electronic tuner cleaner.  If that doesn't work, replacing the switch
is the only option.
