Have you checked all the manifold bolts for torque? It could be that
you have a loose exhaust manifold that rattles when it is cold. When
the iron heats up it expands and the rattle ceases. You can, with some
contortion, tighten them insitu.

Does anyone know why the head on my 1.6 diesel is rattling? It mostly
goes away once it warms up, but when it's cold, it sounds like one of
the exhaust hangers fell out. Hopefully I don't need to rebuild it...
