The valve train is the weakest link of any diesel engine.

But I have to disagree that the MB timing chain is any less reliable.
Yes, they do stretch. However, the average life of a MB chain is close
to 300,000mi. My '86 190D 2.5 with 180,000 had ZERO stretch! Checking
the stretch of a MB chain is super easy. The marks are built into the
head.

Now, replacing the chain of a MB diesel is a bit more involved, but I
digress....
