[Vwdiesel] Switching oils

My father recently went to a friendly local auto parts store for the purchase 
of motor oil.  He was told by the person behind the counter that it was 
detrimental to switch between synthetic and dino oils, that sticking with either 
one was better than switching.  Any thoughts on that?  Was the counter-person 
displaying counter-intelligence?
