[Vwdiesel] turbocharger questions

I am preparing to install a 1.9L AAZ TD engine into my 82 diesel vanagon and 
I need some advice on a potential turbocharger problem.  Its not a TDI, but 
its very similar.

The engine came out of a Golf; it is going into the 82 vanagon in stock, 50 
degree orientation. The turbocharger is a kkk k03-003/96444. My questions are:

1)  The VW engineers obviously decided that this Turbocharger was OK to use 
with a 1997 Golf; is its performance going to be OK for use in my 82 vanagon 
westfalia?

2)  When I removed the oil return line from the bottom of the turbocharger, I 
found a loose snap ring in the opening that I removed with needle nose pliers.
    Any thoughts on where it might have come from?
    Do I need to disassemble my turbocharger to restore the snap ring to its 
original location?
