While they really knew their oils, the take-away I had was that even
the "cheap crap" oils were quite adequate for most applications. And
even then, slightly more frequent changes would generally offset
deficiencies.
Dunno anything official, just firsthand observations. I've seen gassers
where oil was changed regularly I'd suspect (the owner tends to be
fairly meticulous since his business always pays for the maintenance.
Both engines of his that I tore down were beyond belief as to the amount
of carbon sheets and buildup that were inside those engines. One
threw a rod, likely due to starvation of that rod journal. Another gasser
was pure dark brown inside. No real noticeable wear or buildup but
certainly not clean. Cheap oil again. Several diesels who's owner's
choice of oil was suspect tended to have soot hanging all about inside.
Mine will be sparkling clean if let to sit for a week or two. Still oily but
no black except for low spots or catches/roughness in the casting.
Same oil in a fairly poorly maintained orchard jeep kept it so clean that
when I first saw it torn down and in a pile, I thought it'd already been
hot tanked!
Since carbonaceous (sp) wear IS a factor in diesels, the ability to keep
it in suspension IS vital. I know Jake did a bit of research into this due
to many synthetics not being up to the job. Don't know what all he
found but he was quite impressed at just how much wear can come
from poor carbon suspension characteristics. His personal decision
went to Delvac(if that's the right name).
