Yes there is a small screen in the oil sump. Really doesn't do much IMO.
You can get aftermarket spin-on oil filter kits that bolt right onto the
engine at the oil pump gears.

Oil by-pass filtration systems. An additional filter, filters out smaller
particles in the oil that what the standard filter would filter out.
Allowing the oil to last even longer than normal. Extending drain intervals
even longer than standard synthetic oil drain intervals. 30k, 40k, even 50k
miles on the same oil is common when using a by-pass filtration system.
