[Vwdiesel] random TDI bits and pieces question

I'm finally gathering momentum on reassembling the 2000 TDI. I'm pretty
close to sticking the head back on and found that in one of the head
bolt holes in the block, there was a little piece of steel rolled up to
a tube about 3/8" in diameter and about an inch long. I'm guessing it's
an alignment pin for the head and block. Since I got it back from the
shop disassembled and in cardboard boxes (not a recommended method), I
only got one of those things. Anybody know if there are only two (I
know there has to be at least two) of those or one for every hole or
what? If they're even needed at all? The dealer sort of just looked at
me with a dull glaze and we couldn't find anything in ETKA like it.
Bentley does show a couple of pins that I don't know much about, but I
can't tell much from the line diagram.

Apparently, there's also some genius trick to getting two of the oil pan
bolts out. Magical flexible allen key?

One other random question, after I clean out the bolt holes and clean
the crud off the top of the block, should I de-grease or just leave the
film of oil on it?

Gotta get it fixed sometime as the a/c in the '85 went terminal and it's
still way too hot in Texas to go a/c free. Great sauna, lousy date car.
