Nice to be remembered. I am still kicking and learning something new all
the time. Sure hope you get feeling better soon. I don't have good news on
my oil sucker/burner. A quick list of the things I tried from all the list
suggestions are
Venting the CC to the VC all to the intake
Replaced the diaphragm type vacuum pump with a gear type
Adjusted pump timing both directions
Adjusted pump fueling both directions
Pulled the engine replaced rings, and bearings and tried to do break in per
archives. The rings were way worn so I thought I was on to something. Did
nothing to the head at that time.
Oil guzzling and smoking continued so I pulled the head again and pistons
to make triple sure I had the new rings in correctly and did not break any,
they were fine.
Replaced the valve seals and hydraulic lifters after finding every one
collapsed. How the car runs with the lifters like this I don't know? I
really hoped I was on to something again with the lifters but it runs
exactly the same. Did not replace the valve guides but I do know how now
and really think they are ok, as were the seals.
Probably other things I haven't thought of right now.
Finally Tuesday I pulled the engine again and put in a '84 na I bought a
few weeks ago. Learned several things the hard way going from A1 to A2
along the line and got it fired over the weekend. Hoping to button it up
tonight and see if it will hop down the road. I'm sure it has some issues
but so far looks hopeful. I wasn't going to write about it until I had it
further along but you flushed me out. I'm going to have some
questions. Also found out what ashless mineral based aviation oil you
suggest for break in is now after going to my buddies supercub hanger the
other day.
Updates and questions to follow.
Thanks to all. I would have bailed on this stuff hanging on my own a long
time ago.
