  Hard to say but for an example I put about $1300 into body and paint on 
my Rabbit a few years ago.  That was after a complete rebuild on the 1.5, 
right down to new bushings in the small end of the connecting rods!  I did 
most of the prep and body work so add another $1400 worth of paint 
prep work at retail and probably at least $600 of body work.  That was 
on a clean 1980 C Rabbit.  Interior is next along with SOME DAY getting 
the turbo on it.  Maybe after we get the store closed.  :-)
  The only thing you mention that tends to be a biggie is the rust.  Once it 
gets too far then it's not really worth it except as a band-aid until the 
cancer 
kills it all together.  A little or isolated rust is just a few hundred $$ 
inconvenience.  I ended up with a quarter sized hole behind one wheel arch 
a few months after my paint.  :-P  I even banged on that area checking for 
rust and nothing.  :-P  About a $200 penalty plus paing blending.  :-P
