You forgot the most valuable service of the alt. light in a vanagon...
the alternator pully is run by a belt from the water pump pully, which
is run off of the crank (separate belt).  Thus it functions in the dual 
role of alerting the driver when the belt to the water pump has broken.

Saved me a few times already...
