  They usually DO run a bit smoother if even a tad bit noisier, when you 
do a valve adjustment like yours. (Formerly WAY out of adjustment).
The best my 914 ever sounded was when I set all the valves to .010 
instead of .006 for a tankfull after I refreshed it.  Reason being ALL 
the valves were equally noisy!  ;-)  Usually one's a tad more loose 
and you hear it clatter by comparrison.
