First I have to say to Andrew:  don't play hopscotch with your 
ground to chassis.  I would install another cable from the point
 at which yours attaches to the block and run it directly to the 
chassis from there.  I had trouble getting current to flow in the 
scirocco when I did the swap, so I ran the aftermarket battery 
cable to a boss on the engine block close to the starter, and a 
jumper from there to where the stock grounding strap meets the 
chassis.  
Second, on the subject of glow plugs.  I've got a single 
ammeter from the scrapyard inline with a stock relay.  It is visible 
from the drivers seat.  It usually shows about 35 amps.  I think 
four seperate gauges would be really neat, reading on a zero to 
ten amp range.  Maybe even four seperate rocker switches for that 
aviator feel!
