[Vwdiesel] steering column bearing

While laying under the dash to replace my glow plug relay, I noticed a 
roller bearing laying against the upper side of the steering U-joint 
yolk. I pushed it back into the tube above but I doubt if it will stay 
there. Is this one where I can put a hose clamp or a wire tie on the 
steering column to hold the bearing up or am I looking at a steering 
column removal for a bearing replacement? How far up the tube is the 
bearing supposed to be?
