Subject: Glow plug FUSING ? --(Rabbits 1980 to 1984 )

Confused ? --- you have company --lots. If you do not really
understand fuses.

First what is an electrical FUSE ? --it is the electrical equivalent of the shear pin on
your boat prop or a weak link in a chain.

Why does a Rabbit need one for the glowplugs ? ---simple the plugs are
prone to meltdown and shorting out. And the problem is under the dash in
the relay panel. An absolutely disgusting VW disaster. GARBAGE as far as
elecrical design goes.

A DC fuse is very difficult to design ---why ? look at an arcwelder ---and you will know.

In the case of the glowplugs ?---well they are rated as a non inductive load so it
is a lot simpler. Use low melt metal. . Most fuses that I know of are Zink not
aluminium siding----Bart Wineland. ---And fuselinks 50 amps are easy to get in north america.

Go to any Electical shop and ask for a 50 Amp link. They are called ECONOMY fuses.
600 Volt will be fine. 250 ? fine the voltage is not important here ---12 Volt ?Apple Pie.
The links can be fitted to the VW holder.
Does a 50 amp fuse blow at 50 amps ? NO not at all. and that is a problem for beginners.

And can you double up ? say two 25 amps ? yes no problem.
So what types of metal is used in fuses ? ----many many types. Gold,Silver,Zinc,
for sure.

Look up Cefco fuselinks. A 600 V 50 Amp link will make several VW fuses.

Hagar.
