Had my wrecked '85 turbo Jetta delivered today! It has not run since it was
rolled by my buddy's son 2 days after they bought it nearly 2 years ago.
The car is pretty whooped. I pulled the old battery out and put my good
spare in. I put a socket on the crank pulley and it turned over nicely
which was a relief since it has been sitting outside for 2 years untouched.
Cranked it for awhile to see what would happen and it didn't seem too
excited about coming back to life. Didn't know how much or what condition
the fuel was in so I put in a couple gallons of fresh stuff. I cracked one
of the injector connections and cranked it a bit to see that fuel was
flowing. I cycled the glowplugs a couple times and jumped it from my wife's
toyota to make sure it was cranking full speed. Finally it started to make
some black smoke out the exhaust. I had to let the starter cool by then.
Tried this a few times over the afternoon and eventually it started to
sputter. I stayed on it last time and it ran. It idles nicely now but is
pretty smokey. Turns out it had nearly half a tank of fuel so my 2 gallons
of fresh is pretty diluted with old fuel so that may be part of it. He
told me all along this was a '84 so finding it is actually a A2 '85 is good
since the second car I am getting from him also that is without engine or
tranny is a '85 and the interior is not very good in it. This one is
pretty good so lots of swapping down the road. Well knowing how difficult I
made the NA engine imagine what kind of questions I will be coming up with
for a turbo? This is a good time to thank everyone for all the help this
year. Looking back I have learned a lot and really appreciate all the help.
Can't get the other '85 Jetta delivered until I have this one stripped and
hauled off. Should have seen my wife's face when we rolled this off and
into the garage :(
