[Vwdiesel] head problems

I haven't heard back from the shop that's seeing to my head, but it's 
clear that I'm going to have to find a new head.  Thinking about it, 
though, I have never seen an A3 VW much less an A4 TDI in the wrecking 
yards.  I know they have to get crunched sometimes.  What happens to 
them and how can I get the head off one?  Any other sources?   I found 
one factory new on eBay at a pretty good price, but the seller had a lot 
of really bad feedback.  The rest are very expensive.  The rebuild shop 
is looking for a rebuildable core, but I'd like to have some other price 
options. 

Weird to have to be looking for parts this new.  20 year old parts are 
easier to find.
