Original question : Will turbocharging an engine shorten life ?.
Answer : YES.
Grocery store logic : If you put lots of potatoes in the sack it shortens life.

Hillbilly wisdom : Does putting more strain on an engine shorten life ?
Answer : drop in and look at broken crankshafts cracked cylinderheads
burned valves -----none happened at IDLE. ! ! !.

So you want to bolt on a BAE kit ? on your NA ? ---go for it. (don't let # 1 son
impress his buddy's)

I am very grateful to Val and Scott for goading me into trying the turbo , before
removing it. I can't do without one now.(Them thar hills here are some clumps of rock)

Are there any papers on VW tests available ? --- yes. VW did a lot of testing, in the
end crankshaft had to be made stronger and pistons redesigned and sprayed with
oil for cooling. --- look it up , many other changes were done to make the engine
1.6L reliable. It is in a way a redesigned 1.6L NA . (Rabbit and Jetta)

Remember that diesel is a highly strained engine to start with.As weight was reduced
it became delicate.

For you powerhogs (Racers) to get some real power , reset the governor to as much
as it will do ----- Those engines , the 1.5 and 1.6 will do lots of RPM without falling
apart. The 1.5L runaway I had proved that point . Go for 6000 to start with.

BAE stands for Bob's Automotive Engineering. Bob McClure was killed in the crash of his private
airplane in about -83. street driven vehicles was forbidden, was the kiss of death for BAE Turbo.

How much does it shorten life ??? --- depends a lot on your driving --- If I was driver not a lot.

Are some old , never used kits for rabbits , still sitting on the shelf all over the place ?
I am absolutely sure.

Volkswagen also said it questioned the wisdom of turbocharging the
Rabbit because, a spokesman said, Volkswagen believes the turbo
device puts an extra strain on the small diesel engine that might
cause a variety of types of damage

NOTE: VW now knows , it is not a matter of believing. Read some of the test papers.

I am here for the fun of it , so if others have different views ---that does not bother me
a wee bit. But I sure like that Garrett. Hagar

PS:BAE Turbo kit
BAE Turbo kit. ... in Torrance in the late seventies. We made kits for various cars
but the diesel Rabbit kit was what launched BAE Turbo into what it became. ...
