[Vwdiesel] Troubles on the road ----- ( A hillbilly Hagar gives advice ).

I am not a Wizard on VW diesels just yet, but I am a grand wizard
when it come to on the road "Getting it home"

First post more details if possible.    Second  DO NOT Panic
it is expensive.

Here is a simplified test. :    

1.     NO black smoke ????  ---think fuel . not timing or cold start or
anything like that.     Turn fueling screw clockwise 1/4 turn.
if that does not do it. Buy a plastic gascan say 1 or 2 gallon.
And some fuel line easy to do.   If that does it , 
your screen in the tank(1982?)  may be the problem.

The cold start lever can be reached and moved by hand --- easy
turn it to "Start" and leave it there.  It does nothing on the highway.
It is a cam pushing on the timing piston "Advancing" and it is out of reach
of the cam at about 2000 rpm.

Remember idle screw every time you move fueling screw.

If you get Billowing black smoke at full pedal  but can't go like stink
advance the pump ---a " PENCIL" line at the time. You can not move
belt one tooth , it is too much.  Much easier to time from scratch. 
Turn engine by wrench or push in gear 5. Till number one piston is top
both valves closed and pointer on flywheel right on ZERO.
then check timing mark on pump and sprocket. make sure they line up.

Then if she perks up but stumbles at idle. Crack each line while running
one at the time to locate cylinder that's a miss. 

Wash you hands and get your mother to the hospital. My mother died with a plastic hip
Hell she was dancing and doing gymnastics to the day she died.

For extra get up and go add a quart of the heaviest lube oil you can get SAE 50 or so
to the fuel tank.- That is required if your pump is worn. It increases the internal pump pressure 
whicth in turn operates the dynamic timing advance. No advance and you
get black smoke but low power. Vanepump need more viscosity.Use
ashless oil if you can get it.       You can do it.           Hagar.
