[Vwdiesel] oil pressure light

For those following my adventures with my 82 Rabbit, we had a heat wave this weekend (high 60s/low 70s) so I decided to degrease the engine in an effort to find out how bad my head gasket weepage is and maybe try to get a better idea of where the diesel is leaking from. I was also tired of ending up filthy when reaching around the back of the pump looking for wet spots.
Now that I've finished, the oil pressure light stays on. Bentley has a troubleshooting procedure that talks about the LED flashing with the key turned on, but mine has never flashed -- maybe it was half broken before I started. I suspect I knocked something loose with the hose, but the connection on the end of the head and down by the oil filter appear intact. I was out of contact cleaner, so I haven't tried that yet.
I think the Bentley probably tells me how to test the sensors. How can I test the wires. Should there be continuity between the terminals (with the car off? on?). I have a basic VOM.
The other thing I want to try is disconnecting the idle sensor again -- is the oil pressure warning system smart enough to recognize that the engine is only idling? Maybe I discovered why it was disconnected.
Thanks,
Mark
