Like Val Christian said ---- this one is going to be lots of FUN.

Verdict : Some VW diesels do slow down the car , therefore
it is NOT a gasser-diesel issue. It is a VW -VW issue.

Hope some of you learned as much as I did from this issue.
Thank you to Roger Brown for posting the link to exhaust brakes.
Before this thread I did not know such a thing existed.

So when you find yourself on that monsterhill. Stick a sock in
intake and a James Hansen Potato in exhaust and the thing
will slow you down.

Here is a clear statement of a test of the braking effect of a
Rabbit 1982 1.6L NA . :
Starting at the top of Kemano street, put her in second gear and
let her rip . As a road retarder she works just fine --- a little
footbrake to keep the rpm below 5 K.--so there it is ---it can work.

Next I shall borrow that gasser rabbit in town and head for Kemano street.

Physics : Many years of playing around with air compressors
single stage 300 to 400 PSI tells me the incredible heatloss involved.
Red hot outlet pipe. In the VW the energy comes from where the rubber
hits the road.

Hagar.
