[Vwdiesel] speedometer question

I was told that they used to make several versions of the little plastic gear 
that goes at the end of the speedometer cable and they used to match with the 
specific transmission.

  I know of three.  Red, white/yellowish and a blue/green.  There's one 
tooth difference between each.  I don't remember the count to figure the 
% difference.  I think the blue is the lowest count and the red is the 
highest but that's just what comes to mind.
