This is old news to many I'm sure, but my poor man's Diesel Purge
seems to have had a very positive effect on my '85 Jetta NA with 273k
kms.
It was starting to start rough and stumble for up to 30 seconds when cold
(below 5C), although it would always fire instantly, even at the coldest
days we get of -14C. I suspected dirty/worn injectors, so I did this:
Mix approx 1 litre of ATF in a jug, then add 3-4 oz of Power Service
Diesel Kleen (a tank worth). Feed this into the engine via the filter intake
using a spare piece of hose until used up, pour remainder into tank.
The car now idles *far* smoother, and no longer stumbles on cold starts -
even my wife noticed, although she commented that it's still not as fast as
the TD.... :-(
Certainly a cheap alternative to the Lubro Moly stuff, and I don't think it
can hurt - it might just help.
