[Vwdiesel] Transmission Gearing with TD and TD options

If you spend a lot of time near 75 mph, even the TD might be 
noisy with the shorter 5th gear.


  It's bad enough doing 3K @ 60mh with the highest ratio transmission 
they put out in the latter years, which is the 3.94/.75 combination 
mentioned.
  Even the TDI is under geared it seems.  At 60mph it's above the peak 
torque of the engine in rpm.  A little smaller turbo and some taller gears 
and the early diesels SHOULD perform well (better) and make as good or 
better mileage.  Never understood why they went for such high rpm.  Then 
to set the TD's up a couple hundred rpm higher than an FF tranny even.  
At 55, which is what most of them were set up for, it's still about 28000 
rpm, which isn't really an efficient rpm to be running even a "high speed" 
diesel.
