The main PITA difference is the engine mount on the right hand end of the
engine which you will have to salvage from a pre-85 diesel engine ( the gas
one won't hold the inj. pump). You have to remove the pump bracket and
replace it with the earlier one, which includes the round engine mount

The 85-92 jettas have a steel bulkhead behind the back seat with only the
"ski bag" opening. I've thought of cutting most of it out on my 87 and
rigging the seat back for quick removal, as I use it mainly as a truck. I
can get a 10 foot length of pipe in through the now removed ski bag and
close the trunk if I lay the passenger seat back down.
I suspect the bulkhead has something to do with the stiffness of the body
between the rear struts. Although my 94 has the split seat and can be opened
up completely (you could camp in it without a tent)
