[Vwdiesel] Alternators --- ( so you need more amp's ??? )

My recollection is that the altenator on my 91 NA Jetta is 90 or 95 amps.
The replacement altenator (Autozone, life time warranty (which means
four brushsets thus far)) came with a tag showing the actual test
current. 120 amps at a moderate RPM.
The 90 amp altenator is run with a single "A" belt. Tends to self-destruct
if tightened appropriately with a "aftermarket" belt. With a VW or
Continental belt, tightened appropriately, it will slip under extreme
loads (AC on, defogger on, lights on, just started engine). Keying up
ham radio while rolling down the highway measurably slows the car down.
You could consider a load management plan. HID lights in lieu of
those road heaters you call lights.
