.010??? If those are OEM pistons then that's 4X the wear limit! I had a
bad experience with too fine of hone. My Jetta used oil pretty severly and
smoked badly at startup after about 10K miles and the addition of a new
oil pump. New rings fixed it for another 10K (on a NEW rebuild!) Turned
out they were honed TOO FINE. Not enough grove to hold oil to lubricate
the rings. In just over 10K miles I had .054 end gap on the top rings! Not
sure what grit of hone Total Seal calls for but I have the RA roughness and
Sunnen numbers written down somewhere. Should be about as rough as
the little slidey thing on a 3 1/2 " floppy disk (the brushed aluminum ones).
I've torn down many engines with ove 100K on them, with much more
coarse than #500 hone marks still visible.
