Hey guys,
Thanks for all the tips.  When I first posted, the tires had been balanced and the front end aligned with no significant improvement in the problem.  CV joints were the next likely culprit per the advice from the list. I replaced the passenger side with a complete new assembly which I had in the attic. Not much play in the old CV joints.  No appreciable effect.  I purchased a rebuilt assembly for the driver's side ($66) and just finished installing it. There was considerable play in the old outboard CV joint.  The road test showed that the problem was solved. Cruises at 70 mph with nary a wiggle in the steering wheel and a smooth ride.
