You're right, James, I have never tried a 1.9 IDI. We didn't get those
critters down here south of the border, unfortunately.
My '98 Jetta TDI has been slightly modified, I run a 2 1/2" Techtonics SS
system from the converter back but have not got around to ditching the oval
Borla muffler in the back yet. I fired it up when I had the original system
off so it was just running through the converter and it wasn't really that
loud. There are 2 resonators that look like glass-packs in addition to the
rear muffler, so there is really no reason to have it back there. Plus, I
need a downspout to keep the black off of the back of the car - I'll do that
when I can find the time to get someone to bend up a straight pipe for me.
The exhaust is embarrassingly quiet as-is. I think it was designed for VR6
gassers and so needs plenty of sound deadening that we don't.
I also am running a set of Upsolute chips in the ECU. The A3 and B4 use
socketed chips so they are easy to change by a DIY person. HIGHLY
recommended! Transforms the whole personality of the car and you don't
suffer any mileage penalty unless you always have it to the floor. That
won't happen because you'd lose your license for sure. :-)) I found a used
set in Fred's classifieds for $125 or $150, I forget now. Money well spent,
I've been chipped for over 60K now.
I also have an "Epsilonian" device that eliminates the function of the EGR
valve without tripping a check engine light. Because, of course, all of my
driving is done off-road. Wink-wink. Don't need any recycled soot clogging
my intake any more than it already is, thank you. Probably should think
about rodding out the cat, as well, considering that I have almost 168K on
the odometer and there's a good chance that it's partially clogged - right?
:-))
Yep, it was me that mentioned the Kerma nozzles, it's probably well past
time for me to do that as well. I need to get the '96 Passat TDI on the road
first since I don't have a spare vehicle to drive while the injectors are
being set up. Of course, I guess I could buy a spare set so there would be
no downtime.... might be time to start haunting eBay or the classifieds at
Fred's.
Happy clattering,
Lee
