Yes, you need the timing belt cover is important.  Dirt and dust can
wear the cogs on the gears causing the belt to jump.  If you have the
"gluded" vent wing hinges you will likely need both sides soon.  They
are easy to change out once you find some solid or drilled hinge
replacements.

I have owned a TDI Jetta for a while but always wanted a Rabbit diesel.
Now I have secure one. A 1983 vintage Rabbit L 2 door diesel. 1000 miles
on the injectors, 10k on the pump, 20k on the timing belt. 125K on the
vehicle. A couple of things come to mind that (I think) need attention.
There is no cover for the timing belt...does it need one. There is no
vent window on the passenger side. Trying to find one. Any ideas where
the best junkyard is in the middle GA area?
