Sometimes things are not what they seem to be on the surface.
I think a turbo, while perhaps not adding a huge amount to the lifespan of
a diesel, does not do a lot to reduce it, either. As long as you don't
overfuel and melt things down, I propose that the excess air introduced by a
boosting turbo makes life easier on the engine by reducing the soot and,
when coupled with an intercooler, helps to reduce the EGT as well. As I say,
though, this is dependent on running a reasonable amount of extra fuel. That
LDA makes it all too easy to go overboard on the fuel and get yourself in
trouble.
No worries about overstressing the lower end of the VW diesels.
