Then it’s on to dropping the oil pan and checking the bottom end for it’s 
status. Is there any way to check the bearings down there w/o taking that all 
apart?


  If it's a rod bearing then just pulling the pan will do.  Grab each rod 
big end and a knocking one should be noticeably sloppy.  The pan's a 
pretty quick pull and the gasket's usually reusable!  :)
