In this case, it might have helped, as it wasn't that tight (well over 250 ft-lbs though). 
When I borrowed my neighbour's impact wrench for the other Jetta, it wouldn't break it. I 
still haven't got that one off, I'll need to block the crank and use a pipe I think. I was 
going to borrow a 3/4" drive impact wrench (good to 800 ft-lbs), but haven't got around 
to it...
