When I did my 914 heads the machinist told me the first thing to do
was throw away the exhaust valves. I informed him of just how much
those things cost!! They were something like $35 each 25 years ago,
my cost! He said "Huh?" Then I reminded him they were sodium filled,
he was thinking air cooled VW. He said they were fine in that case, just
grind them. He didn't realize they were sodium filled.
The VW TD valves are NOT sodium filled.
