I had an outer joint gradually fail over a year or two (it was starting
to go when I bought the vehicle so didn't notice it). Periodically, I
would feel a pulsation in the steering wheel, usually when pulling hard
up a hill. Later, I found that I could feel a flat spot on the front
tire caused by the "twitching" of the CV joint binding at the same point
in the tire rotation. In fact, I thought the flat spot was the problem,
tires were shot anyway, so installed new tires only to have the CV sieze
for good about 50 miles later.
