[Vwdiesel] Transverse vs Longitudinal Engines

first off i have to say that i have zero experience
with an iltis. don't know that i've ever even seen
one, except in pictures.

but looking on the internet it said that they
originally had a 1.7L gasser in there, so seems to me
a diesel should drop right in. i would only be worried
whether there was enough physical space for the engine
(but the original 1.7 should be very similar in size)
and whether it would bolt up to the tranny, but that
shouldn't be a problem, either. (most vw trannies and
engines bolt up to each other, don't they?)

you might have to do something tricky with the engine
mounts to make them work, or you might be able to
adapt the ones that came with the vehicle. i guess
it's even possible that they'd bolt right on. but
compared to the wiring changes and adding a return
line for the diesel those should be minor issues.
