My '86 NA jetta intake hose was shot when I bought the car. Since the hose
was before the air filter, I just removed it. I would probably do better to
draw air from outside the engine compartment, but haven't gotten around to it.
I tried flexible aluminum drier hose, but it self destructed in less than 10
min from the vibration. I also tried two pieses of Armflex 1.5" (black really
mushy foam, not gray) pipe insulation stuck together to make the 3" hose.
Under decent vaccuum it would collapse and starve the motor of air. The plan now
(which I haven't tried yet) is to use said Armflex (it's basically the same
mushy black stuff, but is $4 for six feet versus $100 for two at the
dealership) and find a three inch wire reinforced hose to stick inside to keep it from
collapsing. Armflex is sold at Home Depot and other hardware stores. It's the
closest thing to the original hose that I have been able to come up with.
Withstands heat and vibration. If you use it let me know if you make it work
(it might inspire me to put the hose back on mine).
