[Vwdiesel] Camshafts ---- ( missing key mystery )

Don't sweat it. I'm pretty sure that the key is a remnant of the camshaft
blank manufacturing process- used to index the lobes when grinding.
However, your cam sprocket has to be loosened to take up differing belt
lengths when installing a new belt, or the cam timing will be off a tad in
relation to the crank, hence, no keyway possible. remember, the cam
sprocket is the last thing in the train to be tightened. Have Danish
engineers have come up with an adjustable keyway that they haven't told us
about? :-).
