Dave,

Your points are valid.  I have a 91 Jetta, which would be just fine,
although I may go deaf driving it.

The reality is that most engines are getting more complex.  I really 
prefer maintaining my IDI, but driving the TDI is allot easier.  No 
cold start.  Tremendous excess torque.  LOWER noise.  Lower RPMs
in cruise.  Approximately equal fuel economy.  Better cold WX operations
(although the jury is out until I get 240Kmiles).

Another terrible thing VW did was to change the suspension, to be more
"responsive".  They threw allot of caster into the suspension (7 to 
8 degrees), which makes the car "sportier".  It also makes the car a
real pain on the open highway.  Directional instability.  Sure jerks 
around the parking lot, though.

I'm not up on all the current models of each manufacturer, but I seem to 
recall that unless you're shopping the bottom end, almost everyone has 
power everything.  It's nauseating, but appears to the the current 
trend.  After all, who buys a TV without a remote these days?

At one time I almost bought a Civic.  Now my underwear has different 
branding on it.
