<<<Since the engine is in the car with the transaxle
mounted I need to build a tool to keep the crankshaft
from rotating. Tomorrow I will make something around
two feet long that will bolt to the crankshaft
sprocket using the four mounting holes for the
crankshaft pulley.>>>
That just might work! Make it BEEFY! I tried just
about everything to get that crank bolt off. I
installed long bolts in the pulley mounting holes and
they bent like taffy. Locking the starter gear did not
work. Clutch slipped when in High gear, etc. I think
its torqued to about 250+ ft-lbs. Only thing that
worked for me was removal of the oil pan and blocking
the crankshaft throws w/ a chunk of wood. I used a 2
ft. breaker bar and a 2 ft cheater bar on that and had
to press w/ my feet w/ all my might and damn near
broke the breaker bar (1/2 inch). That's on of the few
places where a 3/4 inch breaker bar would be nice! I
actually broke a few 1/2 inch breaker bars attempting
removal of rear axle nuts on Beetles. Ended up cold
chiseling those off. Craftsman always honored their
warranty on those breaker bars!
I think a big impact gun will work too.
