>From what I understand, pure antifreeze will actually freeze faster than
the water-diluted mixture.  I can't imagine why, but that's what a
mechanic friend here in Idaho swears.  Also, the low or no phosphate
antifreeze is supposed to be the only kind to use in diesels due to
possible cavitation.  This is supposed to be cause by the phosphates
attacking the water jacket or cylinder walls of the engine block or head
as creating tiny pin holes.  I've read that the vibration of the diesel
engine exacerbates this somehow.  So, just to be safe I've started using
the phosphate-free antifreeze mixed with distilled water at 50/50.  It's
a pretty color also!

i always used to think that straight antifreeze would
give the best protection as well, but since it very
rarely gets very cold here (western oregon) i never
did that. i was surprised to see right on the
container one time that the max recommended mix is
something like 70% antifreeze 30% water.

guess i just lucked out! :)
