[Vwdiesel] Injection Pump

Hi Guys,
I just finished installing a passenger side motor mount - What a Job!!!!  Had to dismantle the injector pump etc. to get the plate off holding the motor mount. Took all day long but the engine runs with much less vibration.  The old mount was completely collapsed.
Changed the timing belt after re-installing the injector pump.  Obviously I have done something wrong in timing the pump.  The engine starts OK, but has absolutely no power - far less than before.  It also discharges black smoke under load which it did not do before.  What is most likely - timing advanced too far (pump rotated too far toward engine) or retarded too far (pump rotated too far toward the front of the car).  Prior to the new belt, the engine ran extremely well with plenty of pep.
 
Any advice would be appreciated
