[Vwdiesel] Exhaust Manifold Gaskets ?

Again I have a question about my diesel rabbit (84').

It appears that there is two ways to install the gaskets that go
between the head and the exhaust manifold.  One side of these gaskets
has a thin metal sheet that covers it's surface.  On the other side
the metal sheet only forms a thin annulus that surrounds the central
hole.

Is there a preferred orientation?
