I guess it's because I'm a selfish redneck conservative, I am cautious about
the unwashed rank and file getting too interested in our little diesels, and
things grown down on the farm that can fuel them.
First thing you know, everybody will have one (or more), legislators will
get very interested in alternative fuels, (like in England where you MUST
submit your excise taxes for fuel you make in your garage), and any other
way to vacuum your pockets.
It's surprising how many new TDI drivers think Diesel is just another grade
of gasoline, especially for Volkswagens.
I say let the SUV gas hogs suffer.
One of the main reasons for gas guzzlers is artificially depressed gasoline
pump prices. If they had to pay what the rest of the world pays, SUVs would
quickly become extinct like their distant ancestors.
Because of the layers of taxes attached to each gallon you buy, the
political motivation is to hold the price to keep the supply flowing to
increase tax revenue at several levels.
I often think gas is sold at a net loss to hold the volume up for sustained
taxes.
