I think the extra work suggested in the Haynes manual #451, (Page 117) (VW
Rabbit, Diesel, 1977-1984) is a suggestion. It is clear enough, and it seems
there is a stop somewhere on the pushrod for this purpose, [ for speed and
uniformity at manufacture] so they say use it.
Having relayed that, I suspect many might get away with just tightening the
screws gently with the push rod cycled for max outward extension. Depends on
the elasticity of the diaphragm.
The other thing they say is to tighten the perimiter screws diagonally
across the housing, a few threads at as time, like tightening head bolts, to
let the diaphragm settle without wrinkle or strain. This is a feel thing, if
you have the feel and the feeler (Eh, Hagar?)
If others want the complete process, it's 14 steps, and I will take the time
to hack it in to text on my 2-key piano (could send it faster in morse) and
mail it with the pic from haynes that shows the rod disconnected from the crank.
