I rigged up my 1.6D and now 1.9D to "breathe" this way. Instead of the 2 separate lines of valve cover to intake and block to vacuum pump outlet, I put in a pair of tee fittings and run block-tee-pump on the bottom then VC-tee-intake on the top and
connect the two tee fittings. Actually on my 1.9D, I have a TDI valve cover breather fitting with 2 ports, one goes to the intake, the other down to the block:

What I noticed on the block is there was a solid gasket behind the bolt-on breather fitting, pulled it off, cut out the gasket behind it and that made it functional.
Advantages are that any blowby from the crankcase doesn't grenade your vacuum pump and also oil mist doesn't seem to get into the pump as much and rot out the rubber diaphram. Of course with the vane-type pump on the 1.9, this may not be as much of an
issue, but it seems to work just as well.
