Then the letter of the book sez to rebuild the pump and fix the problem, or
replace it with a known good one. Expensive, yes. Proper yes. Hillbilly, no.

I know. My comments are just a caution to those lacking in experience, that
get sweaty palms when holding a wrench. There exists an element of people
that when presented with a step by step procedure, will still think that if
a little is good, a lot will be better... they don't have the mechanical
background, and know just enough to get in a mess.
I have yet to see a pump that wouldn't run right when set at 1mm however.
I really question your fuel. The times I have had the diesels out to
Vancouver, I had to go to Mitchell Isl. to get fuel, and it did everything
but blow bubbles out the tailpipe. Really crappy stuff. Used stanadyne in
every tank to get any poop out of the stuff.

Buddy, you need to take a TDI for a spin :-)) They are quiet, they are far
from slow, but still smell proper.

To a point, yes. If you have a mechanical head, and a tight exhaust
valve(s), that isn't necessarily so.
