  That's the big reason I've never given the directions how to turn up the 
fueling on a pump, in a public forum.  I do it in PM and the generally 
only after they've acquired a pyrometer (on TD's).  It's just too easy 
to do damage otherwise.  
  As to what a happy diesel sounds like?  I know lots of different happy 
diesel sounds and to be honest it's all over the place!  Just with VW's 
there are some that have a really sharp sound to the rattle that sound 
great.  There are others with a reall deep, mellowness to the rattle.  
THEY sound great.  It's a bit subjective.  I used to time my Rabbit 
at 1.05mm (yellow dot, -107 A pump)  I later tried the 1.15mm setting 
as Bentley says.  It sounded fine at both but just ran a bit better, at 
higher speeds, at the higher setting.  
  Ideally I'd like to get some dyno time and REALLY find out the best 
settings.  :)  Of course AFTER I have the Compucruise on it so I can 
compare fuel usage to power, timing and all.  : )
