Never really was closely associated to any early tow in/deaths. Dad
had one of the early ('79) GMC 5.7 diesels from new. Other than the
low power under heavy load and lack of loading capacity (springs) it
was the best pickup he's owned. Sold it with 73K trouble free (other than
one injector pump flex ring) miles. :(
My Dasher didn't make it home on it's rebuild maiden voyage. Got to
the coast and halfway back when part of the head gasket blew out.
Didn't realize the PO had been into the engine so I didn't inspect the
block for cracks. Both front bolts had cracks, lifted the head and blew
out that section of gasket. Luckily it was set up as a tow-behind so I
called Dad to bring a 10mm socket, it's tow bar and the light bar and
towed it home.
